Exploring the Saṁyutta Nikāya

Kinh Trung Bộ

The Heart of the Early Buddhist Canon

The Majjhima Nikāya (Middle-Length Discourses) is the second of the five Nikāyas in the Pāli Canon of Theravāda Buddhism. Comprising 152 discourses of moderate length, it is regarded as the core and essence of the entire Tipiṭaka (Three Baskets of Buddhist Scriptures).

These are discourses imbued with the Buddha’s wisdom, compassion, and skillful means—delivered in various contexts to monks, laypeople, kings, Brahmins, and even followers of other traditions.

🌿 What does the Majjhima Nikāya contain?

The Majjhima Nikāya is divided into three parts (Paṇṇāsaka), each containing 50 discourses (except the last part, which has 52), grouped by themes and audiences:

1. Part One – Mūlapaṇṇāsaka (The Root Fifty)

Focuses on foundational principles such as the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, karma, and rebirth.

Highlights:

  • The Simile of the Snake (Alagaddūpama Sutta): A warning against misinterpreting the Dhamma.
  • One Who Lives Alone (Bhaddekaratta Sutta): A teaching on living mindfully in the present moment.

2. Part Two – Majjhimapaṇṇāsaka (The Middle Fifty)

Contains discourses explaining the path of practice, meditation, mindfulness, and insight.

Highlights:

  • The Removal of Distracting Thoughts (Vitakkasaṇṭhāna Sutta): On subduing mental distractions.
  • The Yamaka Sutta: On non-self and genuine understanding.

3. Part Three – Uparipaṇṇāsaka (The Final Fifty-Two)

Explores deeper topics including meditative absorptions, the Noble Eightfold Path, enlightenment, and profound doctrines.

Highlights:

  • The Discourse on Loving-Kindness (Mettā Sutta): On cultivating boundless compassion.
  • The Greater Discourse on Emptiness (Mahāsuññata Sutta): On “emptiness” and tranquil meditation.
