History of Ba Chúc Tomb
After the liberation of Southern Vietnam, the people of Ba Chúc focused on overcoming the war’s aftermath and building a peaceful, happy life. This peaceful atmosphere didn’t last long before the people had to face another haunting ordeal.
On the night of April 30, 191977, Pol Pot unleashed his troops to brutally attack and massacre our compatriots in 14 border communes of An Giang. In the 12 days from April 18 to April 30, 1978, a total of 3,157 Ba Chúc residents were massacred. Everywhere they went, they acted cruelly, looting property, burning houses, and destroying public works.
They mercilessly slaughtered our compatriots regardless of age or gender, using barbaric methods such as shooting, hacking, or beheading, impaling victims in sensitive areas, bayoneting before killing, or tearing people in half. Pol Pot also captured and killed many people in sacred places like Phi Lai Pagoda and Tam Bảo Pagoda.

After the massacre, Ba Chúc lay desolate, overwhelmed by profound grief. Over 30 diplomatic delegations, press agencies, and the United Nations visited the site to witness the horrific crimes of the Pol Pot regime. At the same time, the An Giang Red Cross assisted the local people in collecting bodies for cremation in April 1979.
At that time, the tomb was simply built in a hexagonal shape, with a prominent feature being four arms holding four bloody swords plunged into the ground. Later, in 2013, the Ba Chúc Tomb was rebuilt into a complex spanning about 5 hectares, including the tomb, a memorial house, an auditorium, and Tam Bửu and Phi Lai pagodas.
